RPI retools to educate the next generation of chips engineers
“Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is betting big on chips.
In the last two years, the engineering college has hired many professors who can teach about the tiny devices that now make up a crucial part of everything from planes to cell phones. RPI has started offering programs jointly with local chip manufacturers, highlighting the modern problems that need to be solved by tomorrow’s engineers.”
Former Office Max in Rotterdam could become YWCA child care center
“A former OfficeMax in Rotterdam could be converted into a child care center to help fill what’s called a “critical shortage” in Schenectady County.
YWCA NorthEastern NY intends to purchase the building at 80 West Campbell Road as part of an $8 million investment that would create 106 child care slots — 60 more than the nonprofit group has at its Washington Avenue facility in Schenectady’s historic Stockade neighborhood.”
First Prize Center redevelopment near I-90 close to getting approved
“A large redevelopment of the former Tobin’s First Prize property off Exit 5 of Interstate 90 could soon get final site approval — a significant step for the long-sought project that straddles the town of Colonie and city of Albany.
“We’re close, very close,” said Steve Heider, chairman of the consolidated planning board that has been reviewing the plans for the past 18 months.”
Winstanley buys former Save-A-Lot distribution center in Coxsackie for $20.5 million
“The former Save-A-Lot distribution center in Greene County sold for $20.5 million and will be upgraded and rebranded to attract industrial tenants that want access to the state’s Hudson Valley region.
The 333,386-square-foot building at 1 Van Bergen Lane in West Coxsackie was purchased by Winstanley Enterprises LLC of Concord, Massachusetts, one of the largest regional owners and operators of commercial real estate in the Northeast.”
Realm Artesian Water leases manufacturing space, closes $1.5M round
“Capital Region luxury water brand Realm Artesian Water is moving full steam ahead.
The company is leasing 5,000 square feet of manufacturing space off Sicker Road near the Albany International Airport, CEO Todd Kletter said.”
AvelAvelo Airlines to add Albany-Charlotte direct flights
“Discount carrier Avelo Airlines will start offering nonstop flights this fall from Albany to another city in North Carolina — Charlotte.
Avelo announced Wednesday it will fly between Albany International Airport and Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (JQF) in Charlotte beginning Nov. 7. The airport is about 18 miles northeast of the city center.”
Eric Ledet named director of RPI’s Severino Center
“Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s entrepreneurship center has named a new director, another step toward building a new startup ecosystem at the university.
Eric Ledet became director of the Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship about three weeks ago. He succeeds Jason Kuruzovich, who stepped down last year.”

Imposter Food expands distribution of its vegan mozzarella sticks
“Troy-based vegan food startup Imposter Food has officially launched its products in grocery stores.
Earlier this month, Imposter Food stocked its vegan mozzarella sticks, mozzarella shreds and jalapeno bites in 15 grocery stores and co-ops. There are 60 more locations in the works, founder Ryan Feiner said.”
