Capital Region Adhesive MFG Jobs Double
Adhesive manufacturing employment has nearly doubled in the Capital Region over the past year, and now Saratoga County has the nation’s fourth highest concentration of jobs in this industry, according to a Center for Economic Growth (CEG) analysis of New York State Department of Labor and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
ADHESIVE MFG
In the third quarter of 2023, the eight-county Capital Region had 142 adhesive manufacturing jobs. Nearly all those jobs and growth were in Saratoga County, with a handful at one establishment in Albany County. A year earlier, in Q3 2022, the region only had 71 adhesive manufacturing jobs. During that period, the number of adhesive manufacturing establishments increased from three to five in the Capital Region, with Saratoga County accounting for those two additional establishments.
SARATOGA COUNTY
It is not clear which Saratoga adhesive manufacturer(s) drove that growth, but in 2022 the Mechanicville-Stillwater Industrial Development Agency did approve tax incentives for Polyset to renovate two warehouses in Mechanicville, not far from its main facility in the city. In its proposal, Polyset planned to transfer its expansion joint fabrication operation to one warehouse and to use the other for an R&D laboratory. Polyset makes industrial filtration-grade polyurethane adhesive, elastomer and foam systems.
As of Q3 2023, Saratoga County had four adhesive manufacturing establishments with 140 jobs. That gave it a job location quotient of 10.14 in this industry. That was the fourth highest concentration of adhesive manufacturing jobs in the country, trailing Gordon County, Georgia (LQ=20.59); Litchfield County, Connecticut (LQ=27.96); and Elhart County, Indiana (LQ=28.51). In terms of employment volume, Saratoga County in Q3 2023 averaged the 21st most jobs among U.S. counties.
