This startup spun out of SUNY Poly wants to make flexible solar panels cheap
“Two SUNY Polytechnic Institute students are developing a technology that could make flexible solar panels cheaper, and more productive.
Shane McMahon and Graeme Housser started Lux Semiconductors in May 2017 to commercialize technology that makes super thin layers of silicon, which can reduce the cost of flexible solar panels, and other devices.”
How roots and technology are transforming New York orchards
“It’s 4 p.m. and Peter Ten Eyck is sipping a half-cup of coffee and talking about elephant and mouse hair.
I came to his Altamont orchard to inquire about a unique apple rootstock known as Geneva 935, and he’s happy to oblige.”
Adirondack Studios added jobs prior to landing multimillion contract
“The $2.9 million contract Adirondack Studios landed last month was the result of an investment that saw the company add about 20 jobs last year in a plan to draw new projects to the facility.
‘Now, we will be able to keep those 20 jobs intact and look for more projects,’ said Adirondack Studios Vice President for Development Michael Blau, whose firm employs 160 people. ‘Getting this project was a direct result of adding jobs, including to our sales force, last year.’”
Northeast Power Systems wins approval for $700,000 expansion
“Northeast Power Systems Inc. will start construction of a 11,400-square-foot warehouse and office expansion within the next month after receiving planning board approvals in Queensbury, New York.
The 22-year-old company is investing $700,000 to expand production after booking several new orders including a job making three, 200-foot-long power systems that will be shipped to Panama this fall for one of the largest copper mines in the world.”
Rasp Inc. on verge of second expansion in five years
“Growing demand for industrial control panels is prompting the owners of Rasp Inc. to prepare for their second expansion in five years.
Owners Ronald Richards and Michael Close invested $2.5 million in 2012 to move Rasp from the former Chase Bag factory building in Moreau, New York, to a 30-acre site south of Exit 17 of the Interstate 87 Northway at the southern edge of town.”
After bringing back a popular game from the 1990s, Vicarious Visions focuses on next project
“Vicarious Visions, the video game studio based in Albany, New York, has had a big week after the release of its latest game, a remaster of the “Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy” for Sony’s PlayStation 4.
Vicarious Visions is a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI). The studio employs 150 developers, artists and producers in Menands near Albany, and has produced popular video games like “Guitar Hero,” “Call of Duty” and the “Skylanders” franchise, which is worth $3 billion.”
Via Aquarium plans expansion in Rotterdam as ticket sales are strong
“Via Aquarium is in the early phases of planning an expansion that would provide more space for exhibits and educational programs — just eight months after opening its doors in a shopping mall in Rotterdam, New York.
The planning is happening in the midst of strong turnout at the aquarium, which has sold 190,000 daily tickets and 20,000 annual passes since opening in November.”
Local Plumbers Union State-Of-The-Art Training Center Key To Filling Jobs In Region
“For the 450 members of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 773, the outlook regarding the future of jobs is good. Its state-of-the-art training center in Queensbury continues to prepare journeymen for the fast-growing list of jobs in and around the region, union officials said.
Located at 37 Luzerne Road in Queensbury, the team of expert instructors and support staff at Local 773 serves seven counties that span from Saratoga County to the Canadian border. They provide qualified pipefitters, welders, plumbers, HVAC workers and fire-suppression experts to industries ranging from commercial and light industrial to high-tech companies such as GlobalFoundries.”
