GE Power plans to expand former battery factory in Schenectady
“GE Power is requesting approval from the Schenectady planning commission to build two additions to its former Durathon battery plant in Schenectady, New York.
GE’s plan includes adding on to Building 66 — the former battery plant that GE invested $170 million to transform into a clean tech building in 2013, and ultimately shut down.”
Schenectady hotel first to gain bike-friendly designation
“A Schenectady hotel will receive the first bicycle-friendly business designation in the city Tuesday as state officials and trail advocates kick off their effort to boost tourism on the trail network being expanded across the state.
There are other businesses in the city that make similar efforts and are in line for the certification, but the Stockade Inn was chosen to be first because it was an early booster of bicycle-based tourism, offering riders secure storage for their bikes while they explore the area on foot, seeking food, drink and entertainment.”
New view of economy sees positive outlook
“The Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership unveiled a new way of looking at the county’s economy on Tuesday that it hopes will help attract more jobs and investment.
The newly created Saratoga County Economic Index, which combines both government statistics with survey data from the local business community, shows a “vibrant and growing” economy that is the envy of upstate.”
RPI team cashes in at state Business Plan Competition
“Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute student pitched an innovative medical business plan that helped his project, Sanguine Diagnostics, earn the Capital Region Cup last month at the 8th Annual New York Business Plan Competition and a third-place ranking statewide.
The company, founded in 2015, developed a system to test blood for multiple diseases at the point of care and within an hour through the use of advanced, paper-based diagnostic technology. The team did not create the technology itself, but instead created the system for paper diagnostic tests to be implemented in the healthcare industry.”
New craft brewery opening in Albany’s warehouse district
“A new brewery is opening this fall in Albany, New York’s warehouse district.
Fort Orange Brewing will open later this year at 450 N. Pearl St. It will join a number of bars, restaurants and other businesses popping up in the warehouse district just past the Livingston Avenue railroad bridge in downtown Albany, before Menands.”
McGregor Makeover: Firm moves forward with plans to redevelop former prison
“William Browning views seemingly insurmountable obstacles as stepping stones in his quest to transform Mount McGregor into a multi-faceted entertainment and business complex, including a five-star hotel.
The Florida-based entrepreneur made his second tour of the shuttered former prison Wednesday, this time with a potential construction partner, Rochester-based Pike Development Co., which has offices in Clifton Park.”
Mastroianni Bros bread returning to stores
“The new owner of Mastroianni Bros Bakery announced Thursday that bread from the almost-century-old Rotterdam-based brand will start showing up on store shelves again this week.
A Utica-based company called Pumilia Pizza Shells bought the Mastroianni intellectual property last year at auction after the Schenectady company filed for bankruptcy. Pumilia makes and distributes pizza dough. [Daily Gazette 2016 November]”
