These Age and Race Demographics Are Boosting the Area’s Population the Most

The Albany-Schenectady-Troy metropolitan statistical area’s 2023 annual population gain – the largest in the state – was partly driven by its ability to attract or retain black and African American, Asian, multi-racial residents as well as 30-somethings, according to a Center for Economic Growth (CEG) of new U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

Between July 1, 2022 and July 1, 2023, the five-county Albany metro area’s population increased by 1,087 to 904,682. Among the state’s 13 metro areas, Albany had the second largest annual gains of black or African American alone (+1,129) and multi-racial (+833) residents. It also ranked third for its increase of Asian alone residents (+1,431) and fourth for Hispanic residents (+1,193). The region also had the state’s third smallest annual loss of white alone residents (-4,033).

The Albany metro area also had the state’s largest annual gain of 30-39-year-old residents (+1,192) as well as the third largest annual gain of 40-39- year-old residents (+1,256). All 13 New York metros saw their populations of 20-somehtigs decline, but the Albany metro had the fourth smallest loss (-1,273). The age group with the largest declines statewide was 50-59- year-old residents, with the Albany metro’s loss (-3,554) ranking as the fifth smallest.

CEG INITIATIVES

In April 2021, CEG launched a talent attraction campaign using the CapNY brand, along with a website – GoCapNY.com – and its associated social media channels. To help attract even more young professionals to the Capital Region, CEG launched a CapNY Connectors initiative. The Connectors are local residents who love living in the Capital Region and who have volunteered to share that love to help connect prospective new residents to our community. They work in diverse industries, pursue unique interests, and come from all walks of life. The CapNY Connectors are available to answer questions and discuss first-hand experience of what it’s like to work and live in CapNY.

Young professionals can find a connector who shares their interests and ambitions by checking out the profiles on the GoCapNY website. Website visitors who are unsure of whom they should connect with, can fill out the form to provide some additional details, and the CapNY networking team will make a connection for them.
